MH370 One Week On And Still No Plane
Today at about 2:15PM, the Malaysian Prime Minister, Najib Razak, held a news conference on the MH370 incident. For those who had been following closely the news of the incident, the updates presented here might not be new, as there were already unconfirmed reports swirling on the Internet. It is however a confirmation to some that the MH370 incident is a plane hijacking. You can watch the entire press conference here which is more than 13 minutes long. For a brief summary of the press conference, continue on the jump.

Brief Summary of the clip, with clip timing

  • 05:00 - PM Najib Razak confirms that MH370 had made a turn back based on the Royal Malaysian Air Force radar report.
  • 05:38 - Various agencies (FAA, NTSB, AAIB, Malaysian Authorities) confirms MH370 Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) was disabled just before reaching reaching Peninsular Malaysia after it had made a turn back
  • 06:48 - MH370 transponder is switched off when the plane was near the border of Malaysia and Vietnamese air traffic contol
  • 07:08 - RMAF radar info suggest that there was deliberate action on MH370 as the plane had made a turn back, heading back towards Peninsular Malaysia on a westerly direction and then made a turn north west until the plane was outside RMAF radar coverage.
  • 08:54 - Various agencies (FAA, NTSB, AAIB, Malaysian Authorities) confirm last communication between satellite and MH370 was at 8:11AM, Mar 08, 2014.
  • 10:15 - Satellite communications data also shows possible last location, 1st being the corridor between borders of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Northern Thai Border, and 2nd the corridors from Indonesia stretching to the Southern Indian Ocean
  • 10:55 - based on the current information gathered, crew and passenger details are being reviewed again.

So basically at this point, all the clues are pointing to a hijacking incident, though the position of the authorities involved are still open to other possibilities. What's become apparently more frightening for me is, if what is said about the communications and tracking systems on board MH370 can be confirmed, then what about other aircraft that still operating currently? I'm no plane expert but aren't these tracking and communications system supposed to be tamper-proof? I'm also wondering how easy is it to really disable these systems, this isn't just some kind of movie, this is real life.

Assuming that it is a hijacking, the question on a lot of peoples mind is, what is the motive? and who? If you were to ask me, I'm more inclined to believe that the actions of this incident would be more related internally rather than any international terrorist. If it were a who done it novel, it would normally be the "butler", but in this case, who would be that "butler" be? Are we closer to a tragic end in this incident or is this just another sub plot in someones frighteningly twisted mind.
