Google Hot Search

If' you haven't read my 1st post on Google Hot Search, let me fill you in here. You could say Google Hot Search is a spin-off from Google Zeitgeist project that gives snapshot of the world based on Google's search results. Google Hot Search is the accessible statistical tool available to users that show the latest trends based on Google's search results. You check it out here Google Trends.

What's Hot in Malaysia

MH370 has been the top most searched result in Malaysia everyday since the aircraft disappeared. And with no clear indications of where the location of the aircraft is, MH370 will probably remain in the top search result until a conclusive piece of evidence is found to show it's possible location or the cause of the incident. The search for the aircraft has already involved more than 25 countries with any clear indication of where the plane is now.

Possible location of MH370
In one of the press conference on the incident, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak, had pointed out 2 possible areas where the plane could have been last headed. The info given would further fueled even more speculation to the cause of the incident, with many parties leaning on the hijacking theory. The 2 corridors that the Prime Minister had provided would also prove an uphill task for the search teams, and I'd likened it to from initially searching a needle in a haystack to searching a needle in one of many haystacks in 2 possible farms across continents.

On of the theories that many people found plausible, myself included, was the theory that was written by Stanford University student. Read it here if you haven't (Decompression). The 2nd theory that I found plausible is the theory given out by a fellow pilot, Chris Goodfellow. The theory provided is simple, straightforward and provided by an experienced pilot. You can read it here (Simple).

The next search result that is topping the trends in Malaysia is about the English Premier League Football (Soccer). With the weekend loss at home by Manchester United to Liverpool, many football fans in Malaysia were probably looking for more info on their respective clubs. We see search results from Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool with Manchester United topping the results. With the win by Liverpool, it places them in the 2nd spot behind Chelsea in the EPL rankings with 1 game in hand.

As a Manchester United fan, it has been a dreaded season to watch, but I personally think a drastic change in the club and in the EPL rankings was long overdue as we've seen one of the game's greatest football manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, handed down his reigns to David Moyes. This was never going to be an easy job for David Moyes. Though hard to watch and accept, hopefully with every loss that the club goes through this season will give David Moyes valuable lessons to get the club more competitive next season. One of things that make it difficult for Man United fans to accept the losses is the fast pace of everything happening in this generation which leads to an expectation of getting faster results. "Rome was not build in a day" and eventually the Roman empire did fall.

What's Hot in the Philippines

The top search result here in the Philippines is the Bar Exam Results 2014. Now this is a surprising result for me, in a good way. I've been living and working here in the Philippines and I've come to realized that Filipinos love their entertainment. It's absolutely not surprising to see large crowds in shopping malls during product or movie promotions. And these events are quite frequent. Furthermore, I've also realized that the media here in the Philippines give a large portion of coverage to Entertainment, be it news, talk shows, variety shows and even TV series. It's literally blown out of proportion.

I'm surprised regarding the Bar Exam Results because it was given a huge coverage. I could even hear it the radio when I was taking a cab here in Manila, though I couldn't understand every word of it which was spoken in Tagalog, I knew the radio DJs were announcing the names of the Top 10 students. And you see it elsewhere as well, in TV news and news papers with interviews of the the top students and their families. I really the feeling that this is a big deal here. It's surprising in a good way because it celebrates academic accomplishments in a positive way and I do get that feeling that, not all Filipinos are just to be aspiring entertainers.

A comparison to Malaysia, it would be the announcement of SPM results which are results for the highest level in high school in Malaysia. You could say, it's incomparable, because in the Philippines their talking about Bar Exams, which are exams for future professional lawyers. Malaysia could learn something here you know. Though I get the feeling maybe what is being done in Malaysia is by design.

Another search result topping the charts here in the Philippines is Jennifer Lawrence. The Hunger Games star who was recently nominated for an Oscar for her performance in American Hustle, seems to be a hot search trend most likely due to BuzzFeed.com article on the actress. It's quite likely BuzzFeed has got a large following in Facebook here in the Philippines.. You can see the article here (Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle).

And the last we have Saint Patrick's Day in both Hot Search results. Saint Patricks's Day is originally an Irish tradition of celebrating the patron saint of the Irish, which is celebrated annually on 17 March. The Irish are known to be heavy drinkers and their preferred alcohol beverage are whiskey and Guinness Stout, which strongly identifies with the Irish culture. The color green is also closely associated with St. Patricks Day as it said that the saint had used the shamrock or clover to describe the Holy Trinity to the Irish pagans.

In the 90's, the celebration was used by its government then to promote Ireland around the world and now can see it being celebrated many cities around the world. In New York City and Boston, USA, you will find the largest celebrations of St. Patricks Day in the world, where large crowds are drawn to the parades that are organized in major streets. This years celebration had drawn some negative attention, with 2 of the city mayors refused to attend the parades and major sponsors like Guinness, Heineken and Sam Adams (all major beer companies) had pulled out from the celebrations in support of the Lesbian and Gay rights communities. The organizers of the celebration in New York City and Boston had prohibited gay groups from participating in the parades, but more specifically prohibiting these groups from carrying gay-friendly signs or any anything that is identifiable to lesbian and gay people.
